The bible is not written just as a “rule book” for us to follow.  There is an overarching narrative or message we are to grasp to understand our Creator.  There are regulations that we agree to when we become Christians, but it is very difficult to simply list out the things that we are not to do and the things we are to do. I remember once being asked by a very logical and pragmatic person to just give him a list of things he should not do to avoid sin.  That’s a difficult thing to do because the bible implores us to understand the heart within us and not just the action. However, there are some passages that list out certain actions which are called sinful and we are given alternatives to those choices.  While these lists are not designed to be exhaustive they are helpful to get a big picture of what God desires for his people.

One of these lists is in Colossians 3:5-17.  Here is what we find for things we are not to do or have:

  • Fornication
  • Uncleanness
  • Passion
  • Evil Desire
  • Covetousness = Idolatry
  • Anger
  • Wrath
  • Malice
  • Blasphemy
  • Filthy Language
  • Lies

Here are the things we are to do or have instead:

  • Tender mercies
  • Kindness
  • Humility
  • Meekness
  • Long-suffering
  • Bearing with one another
  • Forgiving one another
  • LOVE
  • Let peace rule
  • Be thankful
  • Let the Word dwell
  • Do all in His name

This may not be a huge revelation to you, but I would like to emphasize that there are lines drawn by the word of God of things that are forbidden for His children to do and still be pleasing to Him.  Let these verses remind us that our actions and our hearts matter before Him.  May we continue to let the word of God mold us and shape us as time goes on.
