In scripture there are many things which are discussed as being of paramount importance.  There are not many, however, who are talked about like wisdom.  The entirety of the book of Proverbs for example discuss the value of wisdom and why it is necessary in one’s life.  It is interesting to notice that Solomon did not just talk about wisdom as some abstract idea or concept, instead he personified her.  Wisdom in this book then becomes a living and breathing person in the lives of the reader.  Here are a few things that Solomon assures us Lady Wisdom can do for us if we foster a friendship with her:

Wisdom Cries

“Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares. She cries out in the chief concourses, at the openings of the gates in the city she speaks her words: “How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, And fools hate knowledge. Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you” (Proverbs 1:20-23). We often sing the song during the invitation “Why Keep Jesus Waiting” with the thought that Jesus is knocking at the door of our hearts.  The same thing in a way is true of wisdom from God’s word; she is crying out in the streets for people to see her, but most just pass by.

Wisdom Instructs

“My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly” (Proverbs 2:1-7).  The key to this passage is realizing that wisdom’s origin is God.  When we seek wisdom, we are asking the Creator to share His wisdom with us.  Everything good comes from our Father (James 1:17).

Wisdom Protects

“When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things, from those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness” (Proverbs 2:10-13).  You do not need to ask the soldier the value of body or vehicle armor, nor do you need to ask the Christian the value of wisdom.  If we want to protect ourselves, wisdom is our spiritual armor (Ephesians 6:10-13).

Wisdom Blesses

“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, and her gain than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies, and all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. Length of days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who retain her” (Proverbs 3:13-18).  Do you want a blessed, happy life? Do you want to have a long and prosperous life? Do you want to have a peaceful, pleasant life? God through the pen of Solomon recommends Lady Wisdom. Let us seek her out, claim her as our close companion in life, and be more blessed in our lives.
